It was said that boys receive at least 70% of Ds and Fs given at schools, create 90% classroom discipline problems, and an average of 80% high school dropouts. Achievement tests can put pressure on young boys to learn to read and write at a faster pace than their brains or their fine-motor skills are ready. Elementary schools also tend to have less time for recess and other activities that help boys burn off energy. This article that I was reading was pushing for getting help for boys so that they can get more out of their elementary education. Do you feel that young boys are suffering any? | I know this is not going to be a popular opinion but I believe one of the reasons boys lag is the schools are female centered. Boys and girls have obvious differences and that does not stop with how they need to be taught. Most boys especially at a young age are very energy driven and have a hard time focusing for long periods where as girls are more apt to listen better. The current school system has been set up that it is taught on a female driven path and any deviation from the norm is considered a bad thing. Many schools have done away with physical activity requirements which is where the boys and girls got to spend that pent up energy so they could focus more during the class. As far as the achievements test I feel they have taken away from education completely. When we were living in Oklahoma the entire school system was set up so the students knew what was on tests and were able to pass. The focus is not on learning but on the students passing a test and the school getting good marks. The system needs revamped in a bad way and quickly. |
