What are the differences beteween maple rosewood and ebony wood on guitars?
im not sure what wood to get for my next guitar because i have a maplewood guitar now and realized i dont like it as much as i thought and when i tried ebony i really like it and never played rosewood that much. I dont know what to do.
At different periods in time certain woods became more rare or less rare. At the moment rosewood is a really common wood for making guitars, it's a strong and light wood. Maple again is strong and fairly light but it's used slightly less in guitar making so a guitar with a maple fretboard is worth slightly more. Thats pretty much it. With maple or rosewood it will still play and sound the same. Maple is just a little bit smoother than rosewood but if you fret correctly you can't really feel the difference.

Ebony is a little bit heavier than rosewood and maple which has advantages and disadvantages. First of all it's heavier, obviously, but the extra weight gives a guitar more sustain.

Mass produced guitars generally use rosewood for the fretboard and more expensive guitars are a bit mroe likely to use maple but only if the designer and buyer prefer to look.
Want to paint wood with a ebony like finish?
I have a table that I want to paint, so it looks like ebony wood.
What is the best way to do so?
I suggest you read a book on paint finishes. What you are attempting to do is time-consuming and depending on the type of paint you use, could also be costly. Lots of thin layers, sanding, waiting for layers to dry takes its toll on most people. Patience and perseverance is the most important ingredient'

Is there a test that can tell you if ebony wood is genuine?
I bought an ebony statuesque on holiday. I would like to know if there is any way of testing it to see if it is genuine ebony wood
check the bottom of the statue to see what the natural wood looks like there. sometimes a faux-ebony finish is applied to cheaper wood to make it resemble ebony, but the bottom of the statue is probably unfinished so check it out. also real ebony should feel heavy and dense for its size.
Is there any remote possibility that East Indian Ebony Wood can be melted?
I do not want any fictitious answers or assumptions. Please answer this question not with strictness and technicality but with possibilities; even if they are highly unlikely.
My first, and most considered answer, is no. Considering HIGHLY unlikely possibilities, if it were treated with some additive with which I'm unfamiliar which would negate the combustible properties, and compressed, then possibly. Anything is possible, or almost. Why just East Indian Ebony?
Is ebony wood always black?
I recently bought a bass bow by mail with an "ebony" frog. The bow came and the frog is dark brown with a clearly visible grain, similar to other pictures of bows that I have seen advertised as having rosewood frogs. I have never seen ebony that was not jet black. Is it possible that this really a "light" version of ebony?
no, in some cases it can be a light brown to a heavy brown... Call Condon Lumber in White Plains, NY 914-946-4111 - they have the best selection in exotic hardwoods. And they can help you with what you need. Ask for John or Tom
If I stain a maple wood bedroom suit with ebony stain, will the wood grain show?
This is an antique set, but the wood needs touch up paint & I want to go darker.
The grain never changes. It will still be there after you stain. It won't be quite as noticable when it is a darker color.
